This course was built on hilly terrain, so you can expect many uneven lies. The fairways are average width, and the greens are full of subtle breaks. Water hazards (two lakes) come into play on three holes. The signature hole is #9, a 360-yard, par 4, featuring a scenic view of the City of Atlanta and requiring a blind tee shot to a narrow, tree-lined fairway.
In 1926 "Old Man" Walter Travis, the leading golf course architect of the time (and winner of the 1919 US Open), was summoned by Mr. Rockefeller and the wealthy members of the Jekyll Island Club to create the, "Best course money could purchase" His vision did not disappoint and had the club members golfing along Coastal Georgia's beach, swept with oats, natural sand barrier of the coastal dune system and the unique coastal terrain. Still in its original condition and designed BEFORE cars or cart
Joe Lee, in 1975, mapped out this a new 18 hole challenge with trademark strategically situated fairway bunkers, playing through some of Jekyll Island's most pristine lakes and marshes. Lee named it Indian Mounds after the large oyster shell middens deposited by aboriginal tribes hundreds of years prior. Indian Mound like Jekyll's other courses is unobstrutive by residential or commercial development.
In 1964, following the Island's inland lakes and Pine forest, golf architect Dick Wilson created the Oleander course on the grounds on what was once the 34th oldest registered golf course in the United States. Oleander, the local's favorite, challenges golfers with numerous dog legs, par 4's, 5's and situated only 300 yards from the ocean, trade winds will often affect your play.
Built in 1968 by Dick Wilson, Pine Lakes wanders through ocean forests atypical of Coastal Georgia. Populated by migratory birds common to ocean marshes, herons, egrets, ducks and alligators there is always a view of nature. Clyde Johnson renovated Pine Lakes in 2002, creating the premier course of Jekyll Island. This course features six sets of tee boxes.
Located in the beautiful, unspoiled farm countryside north of Alpharetta, the Trophy Club of Atlanta was expertly carved out of a heavily wooded and rolling hills site to create a challenging, yet playable course
